Berkeley,, CaJ. When the Univer
sity of California opens this fall there,
will enter into the portals of higher
education the first Hindu woman
student to take a regular university
course in America. Sne is Mrs. R.
Chandra, the wife of a Hindu editor
of San Francisco.
She is studying now for .the en
trance examination aild expects to
take her place in August with 1,500
white sisters in classes of Latin, his
tory and other culture- courses.
Although the first East Indian wo
man to register in a regular course
of an American, university, there are
four others who have shaken off the
shackles of centuries of convention
ality and are" studying in the United
States. Two are in Los Angeles
high schools,' another is taking a spe
cial course in Lawrence College, and
a fourth is studying medicine in the
Buffalo Medical School..
Mrs. Chandra is a Punjabi. Be
sides herself; there are some 50 Hin
dustani men 'students in the Univer
sity of California, all "of whom are
