the lives of their women and chil
dren? The truth Is that a majority of the
newspapers in this country are so
much afraid of the influence of prop
erty nehts that thev don't so the
route for human rights and the peoM
pie are gradually finding this out. All
over the country the wording qlass is
starting newspapers of its own, so
that It may get the news or the
truth about the news. . .
I have just been reading a report toJ
Viov. Ammons of Colorado, maae Dy
a. committee of women, appointed by
' the Women's Peace orgamgation, to
visit the strike region and get the
truth. Here are some extracts, which
have not been very generally printed
by the newspapers:
"Whatever feeling we may have
. had that accounts of the mule war
had been, exaggerated were soon dis
pelled. We declare to you that THE
HLF HAS NOT BEEN TOLD."
"We place the entire blame for
this horror (Ludlow massacre) on the
imported assassins who masqueraded
as sons of Colorado in the unform
of the national guard. There is tb,&
question in our minds but that THJt
ATTACK ON "THE TENT COLONY
WAS PLANNED WITH CARE AND
EXECUTED IN COLD BLOOP- NO
SOONER WAS THE MAIN BODY OP
THE MILITIA WITHDRAWN PROM
THE STRIKE DISTRICT THAN A
'NEW COMPANY WAS HASTILY
FORMED OUT OP THE MINE
GUARDS, MINE EMPLOYES, ITIN4
ERANT GUNMEN AND SLUM'
SWEEPINGS."
"THE MACHINE GUNS WERE
PLANTED PRIOR TO MONDAY
MORNING."
"WE ALSO FOUND THAT MAJOR
HAMROCK TESTED THE RANGE
OP HIS MACHINE GUNS BY FIRING
INTO THEPmST LINE OF TENTS;
AND THAT LATER IN THE EN
GAGEMENT SOLDIERS SOAKED
PAPER IN OIL, AND USED THESE
TORCHES TO SPREAD THE CONFLAGRATION.
"FIFTY OF THESE HUNTED WO
MEN, WE BEG TO STATE, WERE
ABOUT TO BECOME MOTHERS,
AND ONE UNFORTUNATE AC
TUALLY GAVE BIRTH TO HER
BABY WHILE TRYING TO ESCAPE
THE HAIL OF BULLETS FROM
HAMROCK'S MACHINE GUNS."
"THE LUDLOW TENT COLONY
WAS A COMMUNITY OF DECENT
PEOPLE, PASSIONATELY PROUD
OF THEIR LITTLE TENTS, DO
MESTIC TO THE LAST DEGREE,
GENEROUS AND LOVING IN
THEIR DEALINGS WITH ONE AN
OTHER." "THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT
THE COAL COMPANIES HAVE VIO
LATED EVERY LAW ON THE
STATUTE BOOKS FOR THE PRO-
TECTION OF THEIR EMPLOYES.
"WE INSIST THAT THESE FOR
EIGNERS LEARNED TO'LOVE THE
FLAG, YET WHEN THE UNION WO
MEN OF TRINIDAD TOOK $3 OF
THEIR SAVED PENNIES, AND
BOUGHT THE STARS AND
STRIPES TO FLY OVER A PARADE,
THEY WERE RIDDEN DOWN BY
,THE SOLDIERY AND THE NA
TIONAL COLORS TRAMPLED IN
THE DUST. WOMEN AND CHIL
DREN WERE GIVEN SABRE SCARS
THAT THEY WILL CARRY TO THE
GRAVE, A 16-YEAR-OLD GIRL WAS
KICKED IN THE BREAST BY THE
COMMANDING OFFICER, AND
OTHERS WERE MAIMED BY HAV
ING GUN BUTTS DROPPED ON
THEIR FEET.
"WE COULD WISH TO HAVE
PAGES TO RECITE THE TOR
TURES AND INJUSTICES TO
WHICH THE MEN, WOMEN AND
CHILDREN OF THE STRIKERS
WERE SUBJECTED."
There was much more to the report
than that, but that Is enough to give
readers a faint idea of the truth.
It makes no difference that THE
ORETICALLY this was done in the
name of the law and by the people's
own government, or whatever you"
want to call it, PERMITTED it, t-
