IN SPITE OF GUNMEN WAR
THREE WERE KILLED SUNDAY
The sudden desire of the city to'
rid itself of gunmen kept the police
active yesterday, but with all their
activity three men were killed, one
of them being shot dead by a woman.
Pasquale Marone, 701 DeKoven
Street, was shot through the neck by
f homas Calacicko in the saloon of
Acollo Rominto, 903 Blue Island ave
nue, and died shortly after.
Calacicki made a dash for the
door when he fired the shot and ran
into the arms oE,Officer Richard Beh-'
rends. He leveled his gun at the of
ficer, but the trigger would not work.
He was arrested.
The shooting of Matthew Hitzer by
Mrs. Marie M. Barr, 5902 Michigan
avenue, his landlady, was more com
plex. The man was shot as he tried to
force his way back into the house
alter being ousted by Mrs: Barr, ac
cording to her story. He died short
Mrs. Barr is 32 years old. She has
been separated from her husband
some time ago.
Another killing was discovered at
Elm street and Chatam court, where
an unidentified Italian was butchered
to death. Four men are supposed to
have had a hand in the killing. He
was first stabbed several times and
then his throat was cut from ear to
