reason, for you can't reason it out or
excuse it in your i own mind even if
you have the prejudice yourself.
It is only when you appeal for the
Jew as a Jew, the Irishman as an
Irishman, the German.as a German,
and so on, that you arouse this preju
dice. For illustration, all Chicago paid
tribute to Sammy Meisenberg whn
his body was brought here from Vera
Xruz not because he was a Jew,
but because he died fighting for our
Whatever mistakes he had made
"before he left Chicago, and whatever
his record may have been all was
overlooked because we are trained to
hero-worship and have been taught to
honor all soldiers who die fighting un
der the country's flag. '
At such times we don't consider the
soldiers' race or religion, or even his
police record in the past. It was
enough that he died fighting in his
country's uniform; and we must
arouse the patriotism of other young
men so that they, too, will enlist and
fight for us and our country, our flag
and whatever it happens to stand for
in each particular war.
Personally I won't grieve to see the
so-called legitimate theaters put out
of business by the movies. The own
ers are cutting their own throats by
gouging the public. ,
All of us know how difficult it is to
get good seats at the leading theaters
except by paying a premium to a
ticket broker. I have tried to buy
seats at the box office window during
the afternoon, only to be told that
they had nothing in front f the 18th
row or something like that. Then I
could go to a hotel and, by paying a
premium of 50 cents a seat, get the
best seats in the house.
The theaters advertise certain
prices in the papers, but they lie in
those advertisements. The bulk of the
patrons have to pay that premium.
And there is certainly some business
arrangement between the ticket
brokers and the theater owners.
So far the movies are much more
democratic'. It is first come first serv
ed, and nobody appears to enjoy any

seats and play favorites they will
make it harder for the public to get
seats, and the people will get sore at
the theaters that try that game.
At the outset, when the movies are
fighting for position, they got mighty
little encouragement from the news
papers because- the big theaters
were the big advertisers. The movies
didn't advertise at the start. Now,
however, they have become so popu
lar with the people that the news
papers are forced to recognize them;
and the newspapers have got the
movies to advertising.
What really forced newspaper rec
ognition of the movies, however, was
the fact that many more people pa
tronized them than patronized the
legits. That is, the people themselves
forced the recognition; and made
the newspapers see news value in the

ies daily than attend the big league
game even if the Cubs, Sox and Feds
are all playing here the same day.
Each movie theater is building up
its good will, just as a newspaper
builds up its good will by gaining the
confidence of its readers. On any
thing that affects the movie business,
publicity on the screen will have its
influence because of this good will.
When any managers begin selling this
good will, however, they will begin to
lose it just as many newspapers have
been losing their good will.
I would advise the movie, owners,
however, not to prostitute their pub
licity as newspapers are doing by
selling it. They will fare better in the
long run as adless movies.
There will be times, though, when
it will be proper to tell the people on
the movie screens truths the people
want to know and ought to know. I
can imagine a time when news will be
published on the movie screens.
In the meantime the movies are.
