being hired by the brick manufactur
ers. Solicitors from the Thiel agency
and from Hunt, Shippy: Dorman,
and other strikebreaking firms were
in the office of William Schlake, pres
ident of the Illinois Brick Co., and
leader of the manufacturers in "set
tling" the strike.
"Two hundred and fifty guards are
wanted," was the word that passed
around among strikebreaking agen
cies. Firms that supply gunmen
squads on notice, sent their solicitors
to Schlake to bid on the business.
