,good. We -continued to the boxcar
camp of Captain Hughes of the ma
rines, a lean and sinewy young war
rior. "I am not sure it means anything,"
said Captain Hughes, "and I hope it
doesn't" wherein he lied!-1 "but the
peons are frightened about some
thing and are coming in. A few
shots were fired an hour ago. I have
notified, headquarters."
A figure stood at tne salute in the
door of the tent. Night had fallen,
and the light from the lantern re
vealed a grisled and mustached vet
eran. The veteran had been scouting in
the bush, alone. This is great fun.
He had seen a bomb-proof entrench
ment, new. He had found a new
worn trail. He had seen three Fed
erals in tattered uniforms skulking
in the bush.
Far away fires-1 one ,two, three
glowed against the sky. We denied
vehemently that they were mere
charcoal fires. We argued that they
were too large, too bright. Some
where out yonder there was war.
An orderly sprang at us out of the
darkness.
"The telephone, sir! Headquar
ters!" So headquarters, too, was. playing
the game. Captain Hughes dashed
away and back again.
"We are to call up headquarters
every half hour through the night,"
he told us; and added: "And, gen
tlemen, I am sorry, but I am instruct
ed by the chief of staff to send you
back to the city."
Our horses stepped gingerly along
the twisted trail. Night birds called.
And out of the silence came with a
shock:
"Halt! Who's there?"
Oh, delicious fright! Oh, exquisite
trepidation!
We found our voices, though we
could not, I confess, master the
quaver in them, for sentries nervous
in the dark have been known to
shoot i
"Newspaper correspondents with"
passes!"
"Dismount and advance one!"
Six times we were challenged, and
each time we were delightfully
scared. We whistled "Suwanee
River" not too loudly to let the
sentries know of our approach.
A turn in the track, and we saw,
the lights of Vera Cruz.
The game was ended. ' ' .

( mm ,
Cardinal Begin, archbishop of Que
bec, is one of the Sacred College at
Rome. His appointment came as a
complete surprise, Archbishop Paul
Bruchesi of Montreal having been
slated for the place for several years.
As a matter o ffact Canada has
been entitled to a cardinal for some
time, but the place has been vacant
since the death of the late Cardinal
Taschereau in 1908.

To keep a coffee pot sweet put a
tablespoonful of baking soda into it.
Fill it two-thirds full of water and let
it boil for an hour. Then rinse very
thoroughly. If this is done about once
a week the pot will always smell
I fresh and .clean..
