to get that back for the children arid
will keep at it until we can give the
children a playground.
BY MACLAY HOYNE,
f State's Attorney
It is high time an educational cam
paign was carried on with a view of
securing more space for play and a
better use of the vacant land in the
city that is available.
The number of vacant lots and
fields where boys can play is being re
duced every year. I noticed recently
that nearly all the big stretches of
prairie land where the gangs of boys
I played with had their fun are all
built up with apartments, factories
and stores. I noticed, too, that there
isn't the same proportion of vacant
lots there used to be. The boys are
compelled to walk many blocks now
to find room enough for six of them
to join hands and "crack-the-whip."
Nothing in the law that I know of
reaches this situation. The owners
of vacant lots have a perfect right to
refuse the use of their properties.
And the police have nothing else fo
do when called except to chase boys
away.
Moral suasion, personal appeals
and arguments directed at owners of
vacant lots this should have some
good effect.
