Marriages with any other motive
than mate love begin with failure.
Mate love may exist without mar
riage, she thinks. If I understand
Mrs. Austin, mate love may be dis
tinguished from shabby and frequent
substitutes by its desire to accept
consequences and obligations.
All persons who do not realize that
love must pay its way in service and
devotion are love grafters.
Automatically, the act of lqving
ties up with it those who love and the
unborn. .Nature did not make love
free. Here and there an individual is
born with a blind spot for this partic
ular for of responsibility, as with tone
deafness or a lack of color discrim
ination. Mrs. Austin defines this type
as "an accidental and doubtful vari
ant, a bird with a speckled feather."
Birds they are, of course. These
love grafters are not such rare birds
as one would wish them, either in
fact, there are so many of them with
"speckled feathers" that he have
come, almost, to accept the speckled
bird as a type and not a variant.
Men pride themselves upon such
"speckled" qualities. Many of them
are not ashamed to be emotional pan
handlers shameless beggars for
love, going about with their hearts
in their hands, asking every woman
they meet to please drop the coin of a
kiss in a poor man's lif e.
If there ever should be a national
investigation into love grafters, every
other graft investigation ever held
would sound like the minutes of a
trustees' meeting after Sunday serv
