men's record in the 440 by covering
the distance in 7:50. The former
former record was held by Rose Pit
noff of New York.
"I never follow any strict routine
in training. There is danger of going
stale and burning yourself out in
swimming quicker than in any other
branch of athletics.
"Swimming more than any other
exercise 'tends to an even develop
ment of all the muscles. It supplies
a foundation with which one may
specialize in any form of athletics.
"Among women it is conceded that
swimming tends more toward round
ed development and grace than any
other exercise. It helps you to breathe
perfectly. Nothing makes your mus
cles strong and at the same time as
soft and pliable."
RASPBERRY AND CURRANT
Pick over, wash and drain six
pounds of currants. Put them in pre
serving kettle and mash thoroughly.
Allow to stand half an hour, then
drain through cheesecloth bag. Put
over fire, mix six pounds of sugar
and boil slowly 15 minutes. Skim,
add two quarts of raspberries. When
contents of kettle again reach boiling
point, count 40 very slowly. Skim
out berries into jar, fill with juice un
til full, wipe mouth and top of jar.
seal and set in cool place.
Beat two eggs whites and yolks
separately until both are as light as
possible. To the juice of three lem
ons add two-thirds of a cupful of su
gar and one cupful of boiling water.
Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Add
two cupfuls of chopped ice. Mix the
beaten yolks and whites together in
a pitcher. Turn the lemonade from
another pitcher, that is raised as high
as possible, into the egg. Turn two
