Cardinal Hartman, Archbishop of
Cologne, is a member of the new
Sacred College at Rome. This ap
pointment was of particular interest
to Germany, all of the German car
dinals having died recently. The
Kaiser made an urgent appeal, at the
time of Cardinal Hartman 's appoint
ment, to the pope not to permit of
the possibility of a new pope being
elected without Germany having
some representation in the Sacred
College.
