Relations Between Bankers and Politicians Will Be
Looked Into By Merriam Committee-r-City jr
Hall Stirred New Lorimer Dope.
The alliance between politicians and bankers will be investigated by
the council committee on city deposits, headed by Aid. Charles B. Merriam,
and not merely the affairs of the LaSalle Street Bank, according to in
formation which leaked out of the City Hall today. '
The rumor has it that Aid. Charles E. Merriam in his capacity as chair
man of the council on city deposits is going to expose the entire mannej in
which public funds are awarded to various banks.
Evidence will be sought that certain banks give up stock to political
leaders so that these leaders exert their influence to land public funds.
The power of, the committee, however, is limited. They have not the
power to place anyone under oath and must proceed slowly.
A great deal of money in interest on public funds has been made by
custodians of these funds. It is hoped by Merriam to show up the entire
