Day Book is just a little more intelli
gent than those who are not
They may not have any more in
tellect, but their intellect has been
developed. So let's do something to
assist to develop the intellect of our
brothers and sisters of the human
race.
I do not say that I agree with The
Day Book in all things, but it is so
far in advance of any NEWSpaper in
Chicago, or elsewhere to my knowl
edge, that I ask you readers to co
operate with me, a reader, to assist
as much as we can. Clair Sabin,

MORALITY IN CHICAGO
Editor Day Book: I wish to touch
on a question I saw in The Day Book
a short time ago, where a brother
"wood butcher" wanted to know how
a man could get acquainted with a
decent girl. I haven't any wife and
babies, or carry any life insurance,
so I can say what I please.
This question is like a chapter in
the Bible. You can preach on it a
thousand ways.
How is a girl going to get ac
quainted with a decent man? I sup
pose his idea was matrimony.
The girls are practically all decent,
but to find the one that is suitable
to each man, for a wife, is a ques
tion. As to myself, I am up against
it The one I want I can't get The
ones I can get, I wouldn't have, so
there you are.
Now, I differ a lot with some peo
ple in regard to decency. There are
any amount of girls that some call
indecent that would make the very
best kind of a wife, if they had the
right kind of a man, because they
know the ins and outs of the world.
You say, I wouldn't have a girl
that had been on the streets. Well,
suppose it wasn't her choice, but she
iad been driven there by some cause,
like any amount of them have. I tell
you if this low wage scale and buga
boo reform keeps on your decent
working girls will be few and far be
tween. The decent girls will all be
those hat live in high-toned neigh
borhoods, that come out of saloons at
1 a. m. and step into a cab that takes
them home. Fine wife for a million
aire, but not for a laboring man.
This life Is getting so swift that it's
pretty hard for men and women to
get mated just right That's seen by
the divorces applied for. There is
bound to be something about the
morals or habits of one or the other,
or the man's salary, that puts a crimp
in the deal.
If it keeps on a man won't even
be allowed to look at a woman, only
from a distance, let alone getting ac
quainted with them, decent or not.
As the city dads are getting so nice
they are passing ordinances to keep
men and women from bathing to
gether, sleeping, going to a shady
hotel, and various things now. Next
week there will be a law passed so
that theaters must be one day for
women and the next for men. Week
after next there are to be separate
street cars for them, and it won't be
long till we will have to have a per
mit for everything we eat, drink
or do.
" And by the end of the year (some
year) in this nice little moral city,
there will be angels from heaven.
Who will want to get acquainted
with the angels? A. A. Stafford,
3726 Langley Av.
BANK EXAMINERS
Editor Day Book: I would like to
ask you a question: Who are those
bank examiners working for, the peo
ple or the bankers. If these banks
were playing a loose game six months
ago why didn't they stop them then,
or didn't they have deposits enough
from the poor working man? W.

Because of the shifting of the trade
routes owing to the opening of the
Panama canal, the possibility of a
visit from the yellow fever mosquito
is anticipated.
