The American woman lacks cul
ture because the American man has
none and does not ask it of his com
panion in life. The only thing he de
BroR htr to he is beautiful and ele
gant. She must be admired in order!
that he should be envied. She must
be one of the queens of the smart
set. He wishes to read her name each
time he opens a paper at the page
"Fashionable Echoes." For this satis
faction he is ever ready to pay at
their full value and even beyond.
The misfortune of the American
woman is that she has no ideal, the
only aim and ambition of her life be
ing to see how far she can surpass
her rivals, aiming ever to have the
richest and largest pearl necklace, the
handsomest diamonds, the most cost
ly sable furs, stockings sewn with
jewel, even teeth studded with pre
cious stones.
Such are her thoughts, such are
her inventions. The strongest emo
tion, and maybe the only one she
feels, is love of her own self.
But who would be so unjust as to
blame her for thi choice?
