year franchise, over the protest of the
people of Cincinnati.
The company got the franchise.
The Foraker family got stock in the
street railway company. Poraker
got rich. He built tTboautiful home
But he had lost the confidence of
the people of Ohio. The Standard
Oil letters finished the job. He was
retired. This year he tried to come
back. At the primaries this week he
was defeated for the Republican
nomination for U. S. senator.
Had Foraker remained poor he
might have been president But he is
rich and discredited. Merely another
of our political tragedies.
LETTER TO EDITOR
LET BATTLESHIPS WORK
Editor Day Book: As a result of
this mix-up in Europe the United
States are going to lose a lot of
money on import duties.
A while back a little notice appear
ing in a daily stating that the idea of
Wilson and Secretary of Navy Daniels
to make the battleships of this coun

Why not do this? 'Twould make
the proud officers fume, 'tis true; but
let them resign if they do not want
to do honest work. All those ships
comprising our beautiful fleet could
be made to compete with foreign mer
chantmen, with guns to protect the
cargo, furnish Europe with supplies,
and for the first time in history be of
more service than to be a target for a
later model after ten years of idleness.
I really believe Wilson and Bryan
intend doing something, and what
makes me most believe it is this fine

"GET TOGETHER" IDEA
As a result of numerous complaints
from lif esavers and guards at the Di
versey bathing beach whose duty it
is to enforce the "segregation of
sexes" order issued by the Lincoln
Park commissioners, drastic steps
were taken yesterday for the en
forcement of the order.
The guards complained that the
fence erected to separate the bathers
was inadequate and said that men
and women resting their arms on the
ropes managed to get together and
ofttimes ducked under the ropes to
the other side.
The park board made arrange
ments to have a double line of rope.
Each line is fifteen foot from the
other, leaving a wide channel. In
stead of merely duckings under a sin
gle rope it will now be necessary for
the bathers who want to poach on
the side reserved for the opposite sex
to swim under two ropes 15 feet
