DISHES OUR AMERICAN
Something of an epicure is Gov.
Woodbridge N. Ferris of Michigan.
He has many "favorite dishes," ac
cording to Mrs. Ferris, but a pudding
made of fruit is said to have his spe
cial favor. """-.

Gov. Ferris has many favorite
dishes," but I am sending you the
recipe for a desert for which he has
a special liking. I call
it "California fruit
This is the recipe:
Two eggs, half a cup
of butter, one cup of
milk, half a cup of
molasses, half a cup
of sugar, three cups
of flour, one cup of
raisins, one cup of

currants, one teaspoon of soda, one
teaspoon of cinnamon, half a tea
spoon of cloves, half a teaspoon of
salt. Steam three or four hours.
Serve with hard sauce made of 4X
sugar and butter beaten to a cream.

vation exists on the great white way
where chorus girls and salamanders
are being forced by the European war
to forego the traditional champagne
suppers. The price has jumped be
yond the pockets of the ordinary
brokers. To the retailer it has increas
ed $6 a case and before the theatrical
season gets ' fairly started there is
reason to believe that they will be
forced to drink American brands.
The broad hip girdle of crepe or
moire in Roman stripes or other
brieht color is gaining rather than
losing its popularity.
PRINCE OF WALES REAL SOLDIER
London, Aug. 15. As a plain sub
lieutenant, the Prince of "Wales is do
ing duty as a soldier in the barracks
at Warly. If his regiment is sent to
the front he will g6 in this lowly ca
pacity. The prince is 19 years old and
at present is being drilled and march
ed several hours a day with ordinary
youths. No special privileges or diet
is given the heir, to the throne in
