ONE MAN'S OPINIONS
BY N. D. COCHRAN.
Pity the Poor Bankers. Doesn't it
make your heart bleed ice-water
when you think of what a tough time
of it the poor rich bankers are hav-
A bunch of the poor beggars troop
ed into the Board of Review office
the other, day and, with tears in their
eyes and more money than they know
what to do with in their pockets,
pleaded to have their taxes reduced.
And they were headed by one of
Chicago's most prominent beggars,
George Reynolds, president of the
Continental & Commercial National
Bank, with a beggarly $231,000,000
of deposits of THE PEOPLE'S
And because foreign collections
might be bad, or something else
might happen to cut their profits
while the War's on, these cheeky beg
gars want the rest of us to pay more
taxes so they can pay less.
They want YOU and ME to stand
the burden that they want taken off
their fat shoulders.
And none of the lickspittle, boot
licking trust papers had a word to
say against i.
But what a howl there would have
been if a delegation of small home
owners had appeared before the
board and asked to have their taxes
cut down because it is a.cinch THEIR
wages will be cut down by the higher
cost of living?
And what a fuss they would have
Mk made if wage-earners asked that they
be not taxed at all, while the food
hogs are taking their last penny in
outrageous prices for food?
Just remember that the banks are
owned and controlled by the food
hogs, like the Armours, Swifts, Cud
ahys, Morrises and their Big Business
associates. Then you'll understand
that the men who want their taxes
reduced because of the war are the
very ones whom are enrich them
selves by robbing all the rest of us J
because of the war.
The only thing that exceeds the
cold-blooded gall of the food hogs Is
the stupidity of the people who let
them get away with it.
But the chances are that the mem
bers of the Board of Review will bow
down and kiss the hands of the tax
dodgers who want to do more tax-dodging.
Christianizing the Jews. You've
got to hand it to Czar Nick if he can
coax the beloved Jews into fighting
for Russia. For if he can make the
Jews believe he loves them, after all
he has done to them in the past, then
Nick is quite some persuader.
But why mix Jews and Pagans in
this Christian war?
Is it fair to make them risk their
lives for our Christian civilization
until after we have Christianized
The Jews have no country of their
own, and have been getting along
very well without one. We Chris
tians wouldn't let them have any
share worth while of our Christian
civilization. So why ask them to
fight for it and help save it for us?
The only reason I can see for the
Japs butting in to this war mess is
that they are gradually abandoning
paganism and accepting Christianity
as we get it in tired sermons of
Fixing the Blame. Each of the
Christian rulers of Europe, when he
buckled on his sword and started for
war, asked God to bless his army and
his cause. (
This doubtless encouraged his be
loved subjects, especially those who
believe that kings -rule by divine
right; for they would think that a
Tung's supplication to the Almighty
would go higher and be more persua
sive at the Throne of Peace and Love.
It will probably answer another
Tjurnose. The ruler who loses can de-
