CONVICTS PULL THRILLER IN
ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE
Joliet, III., Oct. 2. One of the
thrillers of "Monte Cristo" was par
tially enacted by two life-term con
victs in their attempt to escape from
the state penitentiary here yesterday.
Charles Hanson, who shot down a
Chicago policeman in 1907, was
found crouched in the bottom of a
wooden crate used for shipping shoes
from the prison. Raymond Conkling,
also a Chicagoan, sentenced for mur
der, was hiding in a large basket
used in carrying clothes to the prison
laundry. Both the crate and the
basket had been loaded into a wagon
by a "trusty," who was to drive the
wagcw? outside the walls.
GOMPERS SAYS TURN THE LIGHT
ON THE ROCKEFELLERS
Washington, Oct. 2. Referring
sarcastically to the proposed Rocke
feller Foundation's labor investiga
tion, President Gompers of the A. F.
of L. said:
"Of course, everybody knows that
such an investigation would be im
partial. In proof of that one only
has to turn to the Rockefeller In
terests in Colorado and study the his
tory of the strike of their property."
Then he added sharply:
"The first thing that investigation
should do is to turn the searchlight
on the Rockefellers themselves."

itals that have never been occupied
by a foreign foe are London and Pe-trograd.
