So long as a man remains just
mere man, just so long will he at
tempt at some time or another a per
sonal revenge. Society in its sane
deliberations has realized the dan
gers of one of its members reverting
to the brute of the elemental pas
sion taking control under certain
conditions and society, to guard
against such a time, has made laws
in the hope of coping with such a
situation, but do these laws which,
after all, are wholly finite, dissuade
or awe the individual whose envy and
desire for passion has been vigorous
ly aroused by a fancied or real
wrong? Is civilization merely an ab
stract term," failing of proper explana
tion? Is man underneath the scratch
still the savage? That's what you
are going to ask yourself on witness
ing this two reel melodrama, "Futility
of Revenge," written by Stuart pay-ton.
At the opening of the story we have
Richard Dent leading a double life.
To his wife and little daughter he is
an honest man, a good husband and
father. In the quiet of night he is
the enemy of society a crook. He
has entered the house of a judge. He
is ready to leave when the master of
the house interrupts. There is a dash
for liberty, but the judge has seen
the face. The next day detectives
watch Dent's home. In desperation
he confesses to his wife, who, at first
overcome, later tries to assist him in
evading capture. He is taken, how
ever and given fifteen years in jail,
and his wife is given five years in
prison as accessory to the crime.
When Dent learns that his wife has
died of a broken heart he swears an
unholy revenge upon the judge.
Sixteen years pass. The judge has
been having trouble with his son.
Dent, now free, plans to hurt the
