VOL.4, NO. 10 Chicago, Thursday, Oct. 8, 1914 ONE CENT REAL STORY OF UNDERWORLD WAR LIES BACK OF REVOLVER BATTLE True Story Given Rival Gunmen Figure in Feud How Barney Bertsche and Bill Egan Became Sworn Enemies Search for Mysterious Gunman. Like a melodrama with the scenes laid in the underworld is the story of the feud between Barney Bertsche, once all-powerful in Chicago politics, and Sergeant Bill Egan, possibly the strongest man at the detective bureau, which came to a climax yes terday in the revolver battle that left five wounded men laying along Ran dolph street. The story is a strange parallel to the Rosenthal-Becker tragedy in New York. But owing to poor marksman ship our own little scandal didn't end in murder. In the days of Fred A. Busse's reign as mayor, Bertsche was at the zenith of his power. He had been Busse's boyhood friend. 'He remained his friend in manhood. And Busse even gave him a lift after Bertsche had served five years in-a French prison for robbery. Every crook who wanted to beat the law went to Bertsche's saloon, which was located 'next door to the temporary City Hall at Randolph street and Fifth avenue. To him went also politicians wishing to get into the mayor's favor and policemen whcj wanted, soft jobs. t iiiiiiiwiiiiiiiiiiiaiiii i i Hal 1 1 v f i liimriiiiifiiiairiiianhiit
