NINE ESCAPE FROM KANKAKEE
TWO CAPTURED
Using saws and knives, passed into
their cells in a candy box, nine prison
ers in the Kankakee jail made their
escape last nigSt.-
There were a dozen in the one
room from which nine escaped. Four
refused to flee when asked and were
threatened with death if they made
an outcry. When the bars were saw
ed through and cleared away the
nine slid from the window on a rope
made from blankets
They boarded a train bound for
Chicago, but left it before the town
of Monee was reached. One was cap
tured at this place by the town mar
shal. Another, George Loughran,
who is blamed for the escape plot,
was taken by the Chicago police as
he left-a train at the 63d st. station.
Posses, are scouring the country
roads between here and Kankakee,
as the men are thought to be on their
way to Chicago to hide.
The men who fled were: George
Loughran, Chas. Carney, W. A. Nor
ton, George Ware, L. Richards, John
Richards, Lawrence Sirion, John
Kelly and Charles Roberts, all under
arrest on charges of robbery.

WILLING TO GIVE SELF UP, BUT
HE FEARS THE POLICE
That Clarence White, wanted in
connection with the murder of Jas.
Barry, a peddler, will give himself up
to -a bailiff, but is afraid of the po
lice, is the claim of E. A. Jones, law
yer for the West Side police char
acter. Jones said that if they want White,
who says he is innocent and would
be glad to surrender himself, Capt
Meagher must give the warrant for
bis arrest to George Woods, chief
deputy bailiff of the Municipal Court
He asserts that White claims to
fear the police, and has made state
ments accusing the detectives of the
Desplaines st. station of beating him
up in his cell and forcing a false con
fession from him.
