The new Vale sunken stadium at
New Haven is not going to be large
enough as it stands toaccommodate
the mob that intends watching Har
vard and Yale clash three weeks
hence. Already there is a certainty
practically that 70,000 will pe on
hand. Which means, with the pres
ent seating capacity at 61,000, that
9,000 more" seats are going to be
erected very shortly. Some crowd.
Where is the baseball game that
drew a mob hke that?
Looking for a surprise in the foot
ball contests of Saturday leads us to
take a slant at that 0 to 0 score ol
the Chicago-Wisconsin game at Mad
ison. That probably was the BIG
surprise.
While it was generally conceded"
that the Maroons were going to re
alize that they were in a real foot
ball scrimmage, the game ws looked
upon as a pretty safe victory for
them.
But the unexpected happened.
Dolly Gray, the crack halfback of
the Chicago eleven, who shares with
Russell and Des Jardien the highest
honors of the Maroons, was knocked
out in the first quarter of play. That
of course, was a handicap to the Ma
roons. But that is"not all. The Wis
consin line was a big surprise and
held hard in the pinches. The backs
were there when it came to carrying
the ball. All told, the two teams
were pretty evenly matched, as the
score shows.
There is gloom in the Maroon
camp today. Dolly Gray may possi
bly be out of the game for the bal
ance of the season, and that means
that two of the biggest contests of
the year must be staged without the
sensational player in the lineup. Illi
nois and Minnesota are yet to be met,
and on these two games rests Chi
cago's chance for, at least, part hon
ors in the conference championship.
An X-ray examination of Gray's in
jury will be made today.
The battle between the Harvard
and Michigan aggregations ended
with victory on the side that the foot'
ball public generally expected to see
win, but Michigan put up a much
stronger battle than even Ana Arbor
students expectel and on several OC-
casiony had the Harvard line in dan
ger of being crossed. It is generally
