When the bunk reformers got
through "cleaning" up- vice in Chi
cago, which they imagined they had
done by closing one narrow neigh
borhood known as the levee, they sat
back and grunted with satisfaction.
Truly they had performed a wonder
ful work !
But n6w they're discovering some
thing. They are finding out that the
sin that has flourished since the be-gjnning-of
mankind is stronger than
any band' of reformers ever gathered
And they have found out that you
can't drive the women of the under
world into the lake: that if you drive
them out of one district necessity will
compel them to follow their scarlet
vocation somewhere else.
Yesterday Samuel P. Thrasher, su
perintendent of the Committee of Fif
teen, which has appointed itself
cleanser of Chicago's morals, made
.the direct statement that there are at
least 100 disorderly houses in the dis
trict bounded by 35th and 47th streets
