With eight persons known to have
perished in the wreck of the barge
Annie M. Peterson, off Grand Marais,
on the south shore of Lake Superior,
and with two other vessels missine
and believed to have Been wrecked,.
life savers were patrolling the wind
swept shores today in an almost
hopeless search for surviving mem
bers of the steamer C. P. Curtin and
the barge S. N. Marvin.
These vessels and possibly others
are thought to have been pounded to
pieces in the terrific gale 'that has
lashed Superior for two days. The
bodies of the Peterson's crew six
men and two "women were picked
up on the -shore eight miles east of
Grand Marais ana were taken to
Grand Marais today.
"THE GOAT" MUST DIE
Ass't State's Att'y James O'Brien
obtained his third death penalty in
three weeks last night when a jury
yesterday sentenced James Franche,
"Duffy the Goat," to die on the gal
lows. "The Goat" showed no emotion
when the verdict was read.
The two other men sentenced to
death are Joseph Esposito and Ros
well C. Smith.
O'CONNOR IS EXONERATED
John J. O'Connor, engineer of the
Bowen high school, was exonerated
today of the serious charge made
against him by Rose Dropinskyj 15,
O'Connor, who is a married man
and a father, has undergone two
trials on the girl's story. Recently
he was suspended by the school
board pending his case in court. This
will doubtless now be removed.
