H steel mills are shut down, times
are fair in the farming centers and
bad in the industrial centers.
When crops and iron and steel are
nourishing the. times are fine every
where. '--
Crops were good this fall, but the
iron and steel mills were largely
closed. But bright times are indi
cated by activities in the three great
est iron and steel centers Pitts
burgh, Cleveland and Chicago.
IRON AND STEEL ORDERS IN
CREASE AT PITTSBURGH
Pittsburgh, Pa. Great activity is
noted in the wire mills, large orders
having been received for barb wire
to be used as entanglements in the
war zone. The Cambria Steel Com
pany has just received large orders
from the Pennsylvania Railroad Com
pany. The Carnegie Crucible Steel
Company and the Pittsburgh Steel
Company have bookee good orders
from Europe. Extensiye" iron and'
steel orders are expected alj along
the line about New Year's. Business
is improving at the chain of Westing
house works.
MANY MILLS START UP
THOUSANDS GET WORK
There is great activity in the iron
and steel industry in the Chicago dis
trict. Evidently big orders are com
ing in. The great steel mills at Gary,
Ind., have lighted up and 5,000 idle
men will have been put to work by
Dec. 1. Two thousand more have
been taken care of by the starting
up of the Kokomo (Ind.) steel and
wire works. During the past ip days
several thousand men who have
been idle two months have returned
to work in the steel mills at Indiana
Harbor, Ind:, Hammond, Ind., and
East Chicago.
REVIVAL OF IRON AND STEEL
REPORTED BY CLEVELAND
, Cleveland, O. Marked interest is
shown, ip. t&e , Cleveland "QnaaL
steel district in contract prices for
future deliveries. Since election
there has been a great change in the
tone of the buying market. Sales in
pig iron are now being made in 100
to 600-ton lots. The iron and steel
business is undoubtedly on the up
ward trend. Business men in gen
eral report a revival in the pig iron
market in Cleveland, Pittsburgh and
Buffalo districts.
REASON ENOUGH
"My, I'd like to own real estate on
this corner."
"Does the property command good
figures?"
"In a way. More pretty girls pass
here than anywhere else."
