AMERICAN GIRL RESCUED FROM CELLAR IN
HEART OF EUROPEAN BATTLE ZONE

Ida Champion, a co-ed of the "University of California, who -was re-
cently rescued from the European War Zone by Elmer J. Esperence, a
pohceman of San Farncisco. Esperence went to Europe to locate his
mother, Mrs Leonia Esperence, who was traveling with Mrs. Irma Cham
pion and her daughter. Ida After a two-months search through the devas
tated region of Prance and Luxemburg, Esperence lnally located the party
in a cellar where they were hiding Their experiences had been terrible
and their phght pitiable For days they had lived on nothing but raw
potatoes. Penniless and weary, they had dodged from place to place,
always m the wake or the direct pathway of the battles. Several times
they were taken for English spies and narrowly escaped bemg shot The
soldiers refused to recognize their passports and they lived in constant
dread of capture.
