ONE MAN'S OPINIONS

Rotten Service. If Mayor Harri
son wants to get a line on what the
PEOPLE of Chicago really need let
him spend an hour on Madison street
some evening from the Northwestern
station to Racine avenue.
, He will see crowds of people stand
ing at the corners waiting for a
chance to get on a car going west,
and sometimes four or five crowded
cars passing a corner without stop
ping and men, women and children
waiting, waiting, waiting for a chance
to get home.
The service is scientific from a
street railway standpoint. The peo
ple are packed in like sardines. Front
and rear platforms are crowded to
the last inch of standing room and
every inch of space in the car is
packed with suffering humanity.
I walked from Halst'ed street on
Madison to the Northwestern station
to get a car going west one evening
this week about 5 o'clock. What
was done to human being in the way
of packing and crowding wouldn't
be permitted in cattle cars. But it
makes money for the street railway
magnates who ride to and from the
loop in automobiles.
I would like to see all automobiles
kept out of the loop for a week, so
that street railway owners and man
agers and mayors and newspaper
publishers would have to use the
street railways and thus find out for
themselves what the people of Chica
go who don't own automobiles have
to submit to.
Other lines are just as bad. I cite
the Madison street line because of
what I saw on this one occasion.
And I wondered at the marvelous
patience, good humor and philosoph
ical submissiveness of the people.
They are as submissive to outrageous
abuse as so many sheep. Their
rights have been violated so long and
so flagrantly that they seem to have
forgotten that they have any rights.
They seem to have forgotten that the
streets of Chicago belong to the peo
ple and not to Insull, Busby and the
heirs of old Marshall Field.
Street railway service in Chicago is
rotten. It is disgraceful. That Chi
cago "I Will" stuff makes me laugh.
The cattle, sheep and hogs at the
stockyards get more human treat
ment than the men. women and chil
dren who really make Chicago. What
I can't understand is why they stand
Downtown Subways. The people
will do well to keep an eye on that
traction fund. The owners of street
railway bonds and stocks very like
ly get nervous when they see that city
fund gradually climbing at the rate
of several millions a year. Doubt
less they would like to see the money
spent so that it won't go on increas
ing like the Marshall Field fortune,
which is "invested and re-invested
If the money can be sunk into loop
subways that won't be worth a darn,
jib the city but can be used by the
street railways to increase the con
gestion in the loop, that will be fine
business for the loop; and may help
ward off the day of municipal own
ership. Any subway scheme the loop news
papers advocate will doubtless be sat
isfactory both to the street railway
interests and to the State street
stores, for the subways will have en
trances, no doubt, to Marshall Field's
store and the stores of other big ad
vertisers. Chicago should not start in on any
subway program until the city is
ready to construct subways for all of
the people of Chicago and go through
with the program once it is started.
Citizens 'can regard with suspicion
any subway scheme that is fathered
in the loop.
