They were ultimately successful
with the Johnson case, but have
started the Marquard difficulty in
time to have it all cleared away when
the season opens.
Plans for the Cub training trip, ar
ranged, by President Thomas and ap
proved by Manager Bresnahan, who
arrived here yesterday, indicate the
era of safe and sane conditioning for
West Side athletes has at last arrived.
No more will there be the dollar
snatching barnstorming through
' American association territory, where
all the good effects of the Florida
weather are kicked away for the sake
of a few pieces of eight and a notice
in the papers.
Feb. 28 the athletes will report at
Tampa. There will be no general ex
odus, each man going to the Florida
city from his home. By March 1 it
is figured that all will be on the
ground and settled in their quarters.
Then will begin a month of arduous
training under the watchful eye of
Roger, who will pay particular atten
tion to the pitching; recruits.
Practice game? have been arranged
by the Winter Baseball Association of
Tampa, through whose efforts the
Cubs were secured as an attraction.
Some of the games will probably be
against big league teams, Mackraen
and St. Louis Browns were on the
list last year, both being in winter
camp a Jew miles from Tampa.
This program should bring the men
o fighting trim gradually and natur
ally. March 31 will be get-away day,
and the first game of the northern
trip will be at Savannah, April 1.
Then come games April 2-3, at Birm
ingham; 4, at Nashville; 5-6, at Chat
tanooga, and- 8-11, at Memphis,
That is an easy schedule, Only five
cities are on the list, and there will b'e
no all-night sleeper jumps with a
quick ride to the ball park for a game".

From Memphis the team will come
directly home, arriving here April 12.
A game may be played with an Amer
ican League team here as a curtain
raiser. In any event, the athletes
will have a short rest before firing the
opening gun of the 1915 campaign,
The program sounds encouraging
and a great change from training
trips of the past. The Cubs will not
get out of the hot belt until a couple
of days before the season opens, and
should be ready to get off on the
jump gainst whatever opposition
may be furnished by the western end
of the National league.
