THE WOMEN OF CHICAGO CAN MAKE THE
ISSUE IN THE NEXT MUNICIPAL CAMPAIGN
BY N. D. COCHRAN
The women of Chicago have started in upon a campaign that will
make the men sit up and take notice before the next municipal campaign
K . I refer to the campaign for municipal ownership of the telephone sys
tem, with A PHONE IN EVERY HOME AND SERVICE AT A PENNY A
Men politicians have made capital pt municipal ownership for years.
Repeatedly the people have voted for municipal ownership of public util
ities, and office-seekers have made rosy promises. But these rosy promises
were forgotten after election, and practically NOTHING has been done
by way of keeping them.
Year after year the people have been fooled; and the game would
probably have gone on without end had the women not been given the
right to vote and take part in city government.
The beauty of the campaign the women of Chicago are making for
city ownership of the telephone system is that THE WOMEN ARE
WORKING HARMONIOUSLY TOGETHER AND ARE NOT DIVIDED BY
If they" do not permit wily politicians and secret agents of the public
service corporations to divide them into warring factions THE WOMEN
OF CHICAGO WILL ELECT THE NEXT MAYOR AND THE NEXT CITY
COUNCIL OF CHICAGO.
The women appear to grasp the, situation much better than the men
do. They seem to understand what a wonderful thing it will be for all of
the people of Chicago if, through public ownership and operation, they can
reduce the cost of telephone service so low that EVERY FAMILY IN CHI
CAGO CAN AFFORD TO HAVE A TELEPHONE IN THEIR.HOME.
On nearly every public issue the men divide themselves into hostile
factions as Democrats, Republicans, Progressives and Socialists; and the
result, almost invariably, is that the 'rank and file voters neutralize one
another's political influence and the party bosses and their masters in the
public service corporations hold the balance of power and control the
The women ok Chicago are opening up a new political era. They are
not tagging themselves in this campaign as Democrats, -Republicans, So
cialists and Progressives. They have laid aside party tags and labels and
are working together for what the people want as CITIZENS OP CHI
CAGO, and without regard to party affiliation.
I It looks now as if the women, in spite, of anything that the party
bosses may do, will MAKE PUBLIC OWNERSHIP AND OPERATION OF
THE TELEPHONE SYSTEM THE LIVE ISSUE IN THE NEXT MUNIC
No "big city in the country has the opportunity that Chicago now has
to get control of the city telephone system.
The owners of the Automatic telephone system have failed to live up
to the plain terms of their contract with the city of Chicago, whereby
they got a tunnel franchise worth millions in the guise of a telephone
franchise. By all that is right and fair the Automatic telephone system
and plant have been forfeited to the City of Chicago.
