SUMNER SUED FOR LIBEL
Bishop Walter T. Sumner, recently
elected Episcopal bishop of -Oregon,
was taken from a Northwestern train
at Boone, la., today and served with
papers in a $50,000 libel suit. The
suit is brought by John Calvin Mur
ray of Boone and charges libel in con
nection with statements alleged to
have been made b Sumner in con
nection with the second marriage of
Murray, a divorced man.
William Dean Howells said of mod
ern American letters:
"In a New England village I en
tered the Main street department
store one afternoon and said to the
clerk at the book counter;
"Let me have, please, the 'Letters
of Charles Lamb.'
" 'Postoffice right across the street,
Mr. Lamb,' said the clerk with a po
lite, brisk smile."
