ONE MAN'S OPINIONS

A Comparison. At the corner of
Halsted and Madison Tuesday after
noon at 5 o'clock, 45 people stood in
the cold and waited patiently while
three jammed cars plowed slowly by
during a period of 20 minutes.
When the fourth car came about a
third of the crowd managed to
squeeze in. In a half hour's time
probably the whole 45 had crowded
aboard, homeward bound. But there
was another crowd in waiting.
At Kedzie and Van Bur'en at about
5:30 there were an even three dozen
folks fighting to get on the cars going
north. At this time there was a pe
riod of 12 minutes between two of the

sengers to fill two cars. Yet all the
cars that came along had only stand
ing room left in them at the time.

among the waiters. A man wijh
crutches stood in the background
There is the lineup on only two
lines in the city. And there are prob
ably close to a hundred lines.
In Kansas City, Pes Moines, San
, Diego and many other western cities
the "jitney bus" is making a big hit.
The street car companies have been
jolted hard by the motor convey
ances. Town folks are loud in their
praise of the new system of getting
folks home comfortably from work.
The workingman can also ride home
In an automobile. The "jitney bus"
is in to stay.
In Kansas City the first day five of
the buses were tried. The second day
75 were running and the third morn
ing an even 100 were doing a thriv
ing business. The situation in the
other "jitney bus" cities has been
about the same.
In Chicago the city council has
voted an item of $3,000,000 in the
city budget for motorbuses. There
are many other moves yet to come
before we will be ndlng in a seat in
stead of hanging to a strap.
Keep your eye on the "jitney" bus"
situation right here at home.
Those western cities have shown
the way out of rotten car service. If
they can get away with it, let's be
"from Missouri" and insist on being
shown why we can't get away witb.1t.
