LAWYER MAKES SERIOUS CHARGES
AGAINST MORALS SQUAD
Funkhousert Crew May, Be Curbed by Law Introduced
by Erbstein Says Squad Trap, and Then Arrest
Women Some Examples ' Snown
A blow for Major Funlshouser and
the curbing of the power of the
morals squad Is seen in the "law of
entrapment" which Att'y Chas. E.
Erbstein cited yesterday in an attack
on the squad before Judge Goodnow
in the Morals court.
Evidence will be presented to Chief
Justice Olson to show that the vice
chasers have been acting illegally
when they first trap women and then
summon police and have the women
dragged to -court.
The case which brought up the
argument resulted from the arrestof
Hrs. NelUe Catxer, Sgg&InakM, av
and Edith Bellwood, a-friend, after
they had entertained Steele and
Grossman, two investigators of the
Erbstein claims that Mrs. Carter,
who is a widow, has been acquainted
with Steele for eight years. He says
she met ,h.lm on the street and "he in
vited her to lunch tne .following day.
Miss Bellwood accompanied her and
they met Steele and Grossman at
Steel asked if he could call that
night and Mrs. Carter consented.
