GETS TRIMMING FROM CITY COUNCIL Not Enough Aldermen Vote In Favor of Company's Fifty-Fifty Plan Twas a "Great Idea" But Nothing Doing Why Did Eighteen Change Their Votes? ' The Chicago Title & Trust Co. and one of its clients, Col. Edwin Rom berg, were beaten in a measure be fore the city council last night under conditions that caused a buzz of gos sip through the council chamber and lobbies. The city has spent $12,934 for sew ers, pavements, sidewalks and other improvements on a piece of land owned by Romberg and the Chicago Title & Trust Co. ask the city to take $6,184 and wipe the slate clean of all special assessment charges. In other words, for every $1 the city has spent on this Romberg property the city is now asked to take 50 cents. Twenty-five aldermen voted in favor of the city splitting 50-50 with Romberg. This wasn't enough to put it over. As soon as it was seen that the measure had failed 18 alder men who voted for it asked the clerk to change their votes. The gossip that buzzed around on the quiet was all on the question of why 18 aldermen should vote "Yes" and then when they were beaten to have their rec ords changed to "No." Aid. Ellis" Geiger spoke in favor of Romberg and the title-trust corpora tion, accusing aldermen of cowardice. Aid. Walkowiak attacked Geiger, saying: "If there is not an intelligent vote on this measure it is because Aid. Gei ger has not given an intelligent ex planation of it" L jfc
