Elsie Ferguson, who is winning
new laurels as an emotional actress.
For the finest acting of the season
to whom the palm?
To Elsie Ferguson, very young and
very beautiful, by universal verdict
and to universal surprise. For Elsie
Ferguson is one of the young actress
es who had been classed hitherto as
winners by the sheer appeal of beau
ty. Yet suddenly she has revealed,
as Miriam, in the new play, "Out
cast," by Hubert Henry ' Davies, a
high voltage eloquence of emotional
portrayal that makes her audience
forget her loyeliness and praise her
for her acting alone.
In her present role of the painted
woman of the streets in love with the
man who rescues her, and with whom
she wishes to 'take a place of honor
in the world, she tears at the soul of
her audience. And, so subtle, so tell
ing are this new star's powers that
she has that soul deeply lacerated be
fore the end of the third act.
At the end of the fourth and last
act, however, the author of the play
heals the wounds Miss Ferguson has
made with the salve of a happy ending.
