JUDGE SCULLY RULES WOMEII
MAY SERVE AS VOTE JUDGES
County Judge Scully yesterday de
cided that women have the right to
serve as judges and clerks of elec
tion. This announcement was hailed
with great enthusiasm by the thou
sands of newly enfarnchised voters.
A few months ago Judge Scully
said he was a little in doubt as to
women serving on account of the
householder clause in the law. But
yesterday he said:
"My change of opinion is based
upon the section of the law relative
to householders. The law says:
' " 'A householder shall mean the1
chief or head of a family who resides
with the family as a family and who
supports and provides for such fam
ily as an independent family.' .
"This was the only point in my
mind as regards the validity of wom
en serving as judges and clerks o$
election.
"So that there win be no complaint
relative to women on that score I
will do all in my power to have the
legislature amend the section. t
"Women have elevated the polling
places by lending dignity to them
The old days of the smoke-filled vot
ing places disappeared as soon as the
women were allowed to serve. Their
presence alone has prevented squab
bles and little difficulties occurring
in polling places on registration and
election days. I -am satisfied that the
presence of women is essential and
that is why they will continue to
serve as judges and clerks."
