STATE'S ATTORNEY CHARGES
PLOT AGAINST GIRL
"A grand jury investigation of the
entire case of Frances Vanderhey
den, the 17-year-old, girl who charges
she was beaten and attacked by two
men in "Mother" Caird's massage
parlor at 421 S. Wabash av., is con
templated by State's Att'y Hoyne's
office.
Ass't State's Att'y John Herren,
who yesterday tore the mask from
Dr. Wm. Hickson, the $5,000-a-year
head of the city psycopathic labora
tory has declared that there was
powerful but shady influence at work
to discredit the girl's testimony. Dr.
Hickson yesterday went on the stand
and said the girl was "mentally de
ficient," but when grilled on the
mental test by which he claims to
have determined her status he made
a pitiful exhibition of himself.
Friday s sensation lay m the an
nouncement that Former State's
Att'y Herbert Lust, who disappeared
from Hoyne's service after he had
tried to throw out the case against
Frederick Bromo, the man whom the
girl says lured her to "Mother"
Caird's, was going to testify in behalf
of the massage parlor outfit
Herren immediately got busy and
made an examination of the case.
This is what he found:

Bromo, Edward King and his wife
were arrested, the case was placed in
" the hands of Lust
The polipe to whom the girl had
appealed gave strong testimony in
substantiating the girl's story. The
girl herself when examined showed
marks of the attack.
Lust, however, went over the head
of the judge, who is the only one sup
posed to order psycopathic tests, and
while the girl's mother was off guard,
hurried the girl into Hickson's labor
atory for a test
Lust a short time later, while still
acting the role of prosecutor, tried
hard to discredit the girl's story and
have the case against the defendants
dropped. This was In the latter part
of March.
On April 1 Lust resigned as ass't
state's attorney.
Herren also said that if the girl's
statement contradicting Hickson's
testimony that he had examined her
in full could be corroborated he would
have the case brought before the
grand jury for an examination on a
perjury charge.
The attack on the girl occurred
about six weeks ago. She met Bromo
downtown while she was working at
the Boston. Store and getting $6 a
week.. He talked very nicely to her
and promised to secure her a position
at a high salary. Then oivsome pre
text, she says, he brought her to
Caird's. She became suspicious at
the general appearance of the place
and the women she saw in the place.
She started to go and to prevent a
scene promised to meet Bromo that
evening at Madison and Halsted.
The girl then hurried home and
told her mother. The mother sent
her to the Desplaines st police sta
tion. There she told Lieut Gallery
of what had occurred. He advised
her to meet the man and he would
have detectives trail them.
Bromo and the girl went to Caird's
again. The police were late in com
ing. When they finally raided the
place the girl was found lying on the
floor. She charges that the evil had
already been done.
