A phono graphic record made in 1910 may be used to decide -whether Walter Wheatley, grand., opera tenor and formerly prominent member of the Aborn company, Is innocent of charge of embezzling $350,000 from Ameri cus, Ga., National bank, which failed last year because of embezzlement by cashier known as George D. Wheatley. Wheatley says the phonograph rec ord was made in England in 191P and he offers to establish his identity and prove an alibi by singing for govern ment agents to show that the:voice' on the record and his own-are the same. The missing cashier, who was also a singer, was assistant cashier' at Americus from 1906 to 1914 and was not in London in-1910. DON'T WANT CHAPERONES Poughkeepsie, N. Y. Halpin and other members of the police de partment, now under indictment as a result of confessions made by Barney Bertsche, Frank and Jimmy Ryan, are being investigated by State's Att'y Hoyne. .Tips received by the prosecutor in dicate that this influence has been even extended among members of the state legislature and that pressure is now .being brought to bear to have Bertsche and Jimmy Ryan lodged in the state penitentiary on the convic tion secured against them jn the clairvoyant cases. It Is generally understood that to reach at graft in the police depart ment Hoyne consented to ask that Bertsche and Jimmy Ryan be par doned. If they were placed in the peniten tiary at this time, with the police graft about to come to trial, it would be a blow to Hoyne's prosecution. Recently it was reported that At torney General Patrick Lucey was going to court to enforce the imme diate imprisonment of Bertsche and Ryan. Hoyne's office got busy and since then nothing has been heard from Lucey. It is that matter that Hoyne is said to have been investigating during his absence from the office for the last few days. It is known that all the accused men have powerful friends who are willing to go the limit to save tehm. .
