local team to attain such eminence.
This achievement has been made
possible by good pitching and sound
batting, together with a lot of hard
work and diligent practice.
The Whales wec not impressive
when they started the season. They
had not been able to get much bat
ting practice on the spring trip and
had to learn that part of the business
during the league games. They have
done so, and there will be improve
ment each day.
Hanford and Mann have put a lot
of strength in the outfield, both de
fensively and on attack. Zwilling is
pacing .at his old speed, and Wick
land is as good as could be desired.
Tinker will have a better team when
Jimmy Smith rejoins the crew. That
will be this week. Then Rollie Zei
der can go back to -third base and
the infield will be itself again.
From comparative scores the
Whales should have a successful
eastern trip. A game today with
Buffalo winds up the series there, and
then Baltimore will be engaged. The
other eastern teams will be met in
turn.
Estimated attendance at the three
parks yesterday was: White Sox, 16,
000; Whales, 6,000; Cubs, 4,000.
Charley Herzog, manager of the
Cincinnati Reds, who had his head
cut open with Umpire Rigler's mask
in St Louis Saturday, when he en
gaged in an altercation with the ar
biter, says he will force Rigler out of
the National league or quit himself.
Herzog says he gave no provocation
for the assault. Rigler says the pep
pery manager stepped on his toes:
'The case will be carried to the ex
ecutive board of the National league.
Lee Meadows, the spectacled pitch?
er, gave Reds seven hits and Cards
won.
Eddie Plank and Bob Groom out
pitched Falkenberg and Kaiserling
and Sloufeds took a pair from New
ark. Plank allowed but three hits.
Cleveland St. Louis Browns played
a punk game, which Indians finally
won in ninth. Five pitchers worked.
Graney banged a double and two
singles.
