THE PUBLIC FORUM
j "TRUE NEW&" I'm certainly
,sorry to say that The Day Book is
.the only Chicago paper which is pub
lishing the truth about-4he labor sit
uation. It is the only paper in whjch
Jhe people can read the "true news"
ibout the great labor crisis and that
doesn't ride in the same auto with
You are giving us a square deal
kand I speak for a large number when
tI say we appreciate it,
f Regarding your "greatest fake"
contest, I think the United Charities
;comes first. I suppose there are a
Jot more of which I have never heard,
Jbut for second choice I take the State
Employment Bureau; last the "Pros
perity Day" parade, which is the lat
est to be forced down the public's
throat Fred W. Thompson, 845 N.
I IT IS A GOOD JDEA? The com
.missioner of health announces that
jthere are 4,000 cases of measles in
jthe city and warns parents to watch
jtheir children carefully and guard
against spreading the disease,
j Under the circumstances, is it not
jmprudent and unwise to hold a baby
show at the Bismarck Garden and
pollect children from all parts of the
city. Should not Dr. Robertson sug
gest that the project be abandoned
for the general welfare of citizens?
I THE MORALS SQUAD I think
Mayor Thompson and Chief Healey
are to be applauded for the speed
with which they settled the morals
squad and its power to deal with the
girls of the underworld. It was a dis
grace to the city of Chicago to hand
pver to a lot of men who weren't even
Clothed with the responsibility of
sworn policemen, the power to gallop
over Chicago, arresting any one they
pleased. The Birns shooting should
have convinced former Mayor Harri
son that it was high time to end the
morals squad. I believe The Day Book
is also entitled to a great deal of the
credit also because it was the only
paper that exposed the operations of
the squad. Mrs. E. K. I, Evanston.
THE UNITED CHARITIES STILL
LEADS. The three biggest fakes in
Chicago are: 1, The United Charities;
2, the benevolent ass'n of employes
organized and operated by State st.
department stores; 3, tag days.
These are the biggest, although a per
son could sit down and write hun
dreds of fakes. LeRoy Marshall, 302

FOR A GREATER CHICAGO
SCHOOL SYSTEM. I take this
means of answering Mayor Thomp
son's request for suggestions to bet
ter the conditions of our people.
Conditions cannot be bettered ex
cept by the opening of opportunity.
To do this many idle lots have been
put into use and gardens are being
started in different parts of our city.
This has opened an opportunity for
In the 35th ward a whole section
(320 acres) of land is being held idle.
It is school land. If this land was
leased for 99 years to individuals in
lots of 25-feet front by 125 deep on
condition that a residence shall be
erected inside of a year at a cost of
not under $2,000, many idle people
would be put to work constructing
these homes, for these lots would be
taken as quickly as the garden plots
were taken. There are many people
who have a little money or half the
amount necessary. The rest could be
borrowed at 6 per cent interest This
would make the rent $0 per month
for the house. (That is, 6 per cent
for the use of $1,000 would amount to
$5 per month and 6 per cent interest
which would not be collected on the
$1,000, which the individual has to
invest, would amount to $5 per
month, net $10 per month.
