"HEROES." I am a constant read
er of The Day Book ever since it was
published. During this time I have
learned that you give your readers a
chance to express their opinions.
You have. done very good work.
My father is an old sailor who has
traversed the oceans for over eleven
years. I have heard the opinions of
other old seamen, besides my father,
and I believe what these men say con
cerning the Lusitania catastrophe.
Vanderbilt is a hero, the trust press
says, because he gave his lifebelt to a
woman. My father says that if the
trust press is right this proves there
were not enough lifebelts to go
around and the owner or owners of
the Lusitania were the only respon
sible parties for the loss of so many
lives. In 25 or 30 minutes during
which the Lusitania was afloat after-
she was torpedoed, if there was no
panic, as the trust press states, every
one had time enough to get a life
belt, providing there were enough to
go around. The lifeboats could be
lowered and away from the ship if
the sailors were trained for their
Another untruth in the trust press
is that the captain remained on the
bridge until the Lusitania sank. If
this item is true the captain would
not be alive any more.
When a ship of such dimensions
sinks those people within the line of
suction, which is about 300 yards,
are immediately caught and pulled
under. If the captain was the last to
leave the ship he had no time to swim
that distance and he would now be
where Vanderbilt is.
Such stories as published in the
trust press, my father says, are in
vented to make stories about heroes
that never were and to fool the peo-1
CONCERNING WAR. I read an
editorial in one of the papers which
advised mothers to teach their sons
to hate war and at the same time to
be preparing for war.
How can we prepare for war anil
have it end in peace?
What preparations for war did to
other countries now at war it will do
for us and it will be only when prep
arations cease that war will cease.
We need more teachers to teach
the world that preparing for war is
wrong and that the steel and other
materials used to build big battle
ships, mighty guns and all imple
ments of war should be converted
into useful articles which would ( do
more good to civilization and man
kind. Nations prepare for war and they
have war. They will continue to have
war as long as they build big battle
ships, guns and forts. It can't come
out any other way.
What we sow that shall we reap is
the truest saying more in such cases
than any other.
No country will see another pre
paring for war but what she will try
to do better and it will be only a mat
ter of time when she will stump one
or more to a bloody combat
Every man is not a baby because
he desires peace, neither is every man
patriotic because he desires war.
Many people in every country are
in need of clothes and other necessi
ties, which they could have were it
not for a certain class who would
rather spend millions in building bat
tleships to protect their so-called in
terests, instead of protecting the in
terests of poor little children and
workers who made them what they
