COY PLANS CONTROL
OF ELECTRICITY
Ordinance Which Would Take Control of Metering- of,
Electric Current Away From Edison Co. Will Come:
Up Before Council Committee Thursday,
1 The people of Chicago pay the
'Commonwealth Edison Co. over $17,
OOO.OOO a year.
For what? For electric current
Everybody who uses the-Edison juice
pays.
Do the people know how much
electric juice they pay for? They do
not. And why not?
Because the meters that measure
the electric current are all' owned,
regulated, repaired, adjusted and
fixed by the Copimonwealth Edison
'Co. Here's the news about it:
The city council gas-oil committee
.yesterday handled an ordinance
which says control.of the metering
of electric current shall be taken
away from the Edison Co. and
placed in the hands of the city de
partment of public service.
After three1 hours' discussion the
ordinance was made a special order
of business to betaken up at 2 p. m.
next Thursday. This was on motion
of Aid. Merrlam. -He 'demands the
ordinance shall place full power in
the city's hands to regulate the Ed
ison meter system, so that when peo
ple pay their electric light bills they
will have a. betterxhance of knowing
the current has been fairly measured.
Aid. Buck, Toman and Wallace
were other backers of the ordinance.
Aid. Walkowiak referred to the pres
ent meter system as "damnable."
