lieve it is THEIR government and
not the government of their oppres
sors. Industrial justice in a country is a
mighty good foundation for patriot
ism that means volunteers who will
fight for their country.
A VOLUNTEER ARMY. Much of
the agitation favoring a larger stand
ing army in this country has been in
spired by men who wanted an army
to have handy during labor troubles.
The unpopularity of the state mi
litia among the workers is largely
due to the fact that the militia has
been used too freely to protect prop
erty rights and bayonet human
rights in the industrial war.
England is making mighty slow
work of it getting the working class
to volunteer for the war and may
have to resort to conscription.
There's a reason.
Workers in all countries are wiser
than they used to be. Ignorance
isn't so prevalent
Now is a good time for this coun
try to think it over. If we are to
rely upon volunteer armies in a crisis
it would be well to change, our tac
tics, quit using the state militia as
a police force to support strikebreak
ers and help organized capital crush
Our wars have been fought by the
workers from factory, mill, office and
farm. There has been no lack of
patriotism when it was needed in the
past There will be no lack of it in
the future if the government is used
for the protection of human rights
as well as property rights.
The people of a government will
love that government if it loves them,
and they will love it well enough to ,
Experts have discovered that to in
sure a happy marriage a woman
should marry an old man. They sug
gest 3G as the proper age and our ob
servation is that after 95 husbands
are comparatively safe from the mis
takes of youth.
The odd thing about it is that a
professor has to write a book to prove
that Yale students indulge in vice.
He might listen when three of them
get together and save the trouble.
Aw shucks, what do they want to
be starting a war for just in the mid
dle of the strawberry shortcake sea
son? ' i hose Ford stories are a boon these
days; they serve to keep the conver
sation off the war.
This is the time for fathers with
pretty daughters to prescribe a war
zone around them.
