Washington, June 3. Tampico
consul notified state department that
May 27 J. N. Bennett, American, was
shot and killed by Villistas, who fired
on boatload of Carranzistas, with
whom he was on his way from Pa-
nuco to Tampico. Details lacking.
A Welland (Ontario) man sought
to enlist, but was refused because he
had on each foot what is called a
"hammer toe." He promptly saw a

Charles H. Slack is reputed to be
a millionaire. Ten years ago he was
one of the biggest wholesale mer
chantmen in Chicago. Today he
lives in luxury in a beautiful home in
San Diego, Cal., says his wife.
Aside from his income, Slack gets
a pension of $30 a month, being a
civil war veteran. Today his aged
wife, Mrs. Harriet Slack, pleaded be
fore Pension Examiner Reed Hanna
for half of the pension allowance to
keep her from destitution.
Mrs. Slack says Slack deserted her
in 1908. She now is living with Mrs.
Hanna Spofford, 3355 W. Washington
blvd. She is 73 years of age.
Lawyers who say they represent
Slack are fighting the old woman's
attempt to get half of the $30 pension.
