ARBITRATION. I have noted in
your last issues editorials -about the
strike problem.
Don't you see that" Arbitration Is
along the right line? The strike is
too much like old passing methods
like wars of settling differences.
Suppose that we exerted all our
ability and energy into solving of all
labor problems by arbitration for the
next, say five years, and then com
pared the results with the past five
years, where strikes have been used
to settle labor problem. N. E. L
GERALDINE, ZITA AND MAXINE.
Your letter expressed my very
thoughts and as you wish the public
to think it over I will write my views
down.
Whenever we place a law on the
statute books we make a certain
number of offenders or even crimin
als, according to the nature of the
law.
It follows also that not all crimin
als are born, but created by our law
makers, who in turn are driven to it
by a bunch of well-situated sinners,
the reformers.
Like the writer of your letter, so
am I opposed to any such thing as a
reform establishment because they
make out of a person what they oth
erwise would not have become.
I myself was put in an institution
when 14y2 years old and what I
learned there cannot be understood
by people who have not gone through
the same thing.
The sex question especially is op
ened to you in such a place and in
the wrong manner, not by the offi
cials, but by the inmates.
In whomsoever sexuahty is strong
ly developed no reform can beat it
out. Quite contrary, it increases in
a place where it is handled secretly.
I don't believe a doctor has the
knows how to cure it So have the
reformers no right to meddle with
prostitution unless they get the gov
ernment first to stand behind and see
to it that a living wage is paid. Sea
to jt that wages are earned that en
able a man to support a wife.
The law cannot expect a person to
control his or her sex feelings all
their life if they are not in a posi
tion to marry.
The reformers have nothing to
blow about in their virtue. I main
tain that they have either had their
fill or they have not been inclined
along that line.
I have no business to scold a
drunkard because I don't indulge in
it. Because I don't care enough for
drink is why I can leave it alone and
there is no sacrifice.
Yes, let them give you a district
since they won't pay you enough to
get real homes. You unfortunate
girls cannot even go to church be
cause they give you the cold should
er. Those who try to reform you lack
your experience. I understand you
and sympathize with you, but rules
of society prohibit me from express
ing myself plainer. I, for one, re
spect you as much and perhaps more
than I do the reformers. Critic

I note he gave a list of those mem
bers that voted for Miss Murphy's
ousting and would like to know as to
their religious beliefs so to get a bet
ter idea whether this was the reason
of ousting Miss Murphy.
Also what is the religious belief of
Miss Murphy that the board of edu
