they have heard only their church
side of it and yet believe themselves
to be authorities on the subject.
Only those who have made a care
ful study of church and state know
the gravity of the situation. All down
through history progress has been
retarded, our most learned men have
been persecuted, tortured and put
to death because of fearlessly pro
testing against the merging of
church and state. Crimes have been
committed that would shock a Bolo.
Read about that massacre of St.
Bartholomew in Paris, Prance, in the
year 1572, when 30,000 innocent peo
ple, men, women and children, were
slaughtered in 48 hours; read of the
600 years of that dreadful Spanish in
quisition; read senate document No.
190 regarding the conduct of the
Spanish friars in the Philippines,
wluch caused our government to
make an investigation and publish
that famous document which has
never been denounced as untrue by
the hierarchy.
Below are a few of the countries
where the pope had free hand for
centuries and we find the following
percentage of the people illiterate:
Portugal, 75 per cent; Mexico, 75
per cent; Spain, 78 per cent; Brazil,
75 per cent; Guatemala, 92 per cent
Do we want such conditions to exist
in this country.
Our country is in greater peril of
religion than any other country in
the world because we have several
hundred denominations dipping into
public affairs where others only have
one.
We can no longer boast of a sep
aration of church and state when we
think a moment The president and
his cabinet have recognized Thanks
giving day, Easter, Christmas, Cardi
nals' day and the Pan-American
mass.
Our government collects large
amounts of money from Mexico and
turns it over to the California Jesuits
or receives a papal delegation at the
white house requesting the appropri
ation df public funds for sectarian
purposes. Chaplins in both the army
and navy, representatives of various
sects, principally the Roman Catho
lic, are paid salaries from the public
funds. Twenty-four states have
made Columbus day a state holiday
in honor of the Catholic church.
Churches in most states are given a
free hand to operate without license
or interference and are exempt from
taxation.
Religion is taught in our schools.
Churches are operating schools, hos
pitals, penal institutions, laundries,
shirt and garment factories with free
help furnished by our courts, and the
state helps the game along by appro
priating money for their upkeep.
Neither the state factory inspector
nor representatives of the courts have
authority to call on the inmates or to
inspect the institutions. Some insti
tutions are not averse to an inspec
tion, but the Roman Catholic institu
tions positively refuse to allow the
state to make inspections.
Some churches have their own
laws; some have an army; some have
church fairs where gambling and raf
fles are indulged in contrary to law,
liquor occasionally also being sold;
some are in the white slave business;
some are in the hotel, restaurant,
rooming house business or second
hand stores dealing in old boots,
clothing, hardware, kitchen utensils
and a thousand other things too nu
merous to mention.
Let the churches keep out of the
business world, politics, secular and
public affairs, if the republic is to
continue as founded. Now, in closing,
I will just plead guilty of being a
narrow-minded religious bigot which
will make it unnecessary for any one
to call me one. Lee Green, 22 N.
