"BOOST CHICAGO." When busi
ness men talk about boosting Chi
cago, what do they mean? What is
Boosting a town generally means
boosting business, building up the
town, getting more factories, more
business, more population. I don't
recall any boost movement whose
purpose was to boost people or to
build up the character of the popula
tion. I don't object to boosting a town
as to size, provided they don't neglect
the people we already have while
trying to get more.
I thing that some day the aim of
cities will be rather to build up the
men, women and children already
here than merely to try to get more
people inside the city limits.
Then we will judge cities by the
character of the people rather than
by mere numbers.
And by the kind of men and wom

of factories and skyscrapers.
Then we will understand that peo
ple make a city, not buildings, banks,
railroads and other things built of
iron and steel and stone and concrete
CONFISCATION. Some of our

phone system when the owners of
the system fail to live up to their
These same bankers will loan a
man money on collateral, with an
agreement that if the borrower does
not keep his obligation and pay the
note they can confiscate the collat
eral. Do they confiscate the collateral if
the man doesn't pay? You bet they
do. That's part of their business.
There goes Spain getting ready to
do something for which she will be
sorry. And when the mauve and pur
ple with baby blue trimming book is
issued we will read that they were
forced into it
If they put Sherlock Holmes to
work to discover who tried to blow
up Andy Carnegie he would seek first
among towns to which he has given
libraries. Elemental, Watson.
We are commencing to believe that
the Five Little Tailors of Tooley St.
are doing most of the writing on the
war for England.
Anyhow we are discovering that
we were all wrong when we went to
war in 1812. England admits it and
insists upon it
United States dollars are worth
$1.02 in London and before long we
won't be able to get one at any price
in this country.
