Says City Would Have to Pay $145,000,000 for Surface

President Busby -was on the grill
before the street railway arbitration
board this morning and went on
again at 2 p. m.
Lawyers Alschuler and LeBosby
for the men dragged some interesting
information from the reluctant wit
ness, and got some important facts
for the public.
How Chicago is approaching public
ownership like a crab was shown
when Busby said if the- city took over
the surface lines now the price
would be $145,000,000 as against
55,OOQ,000 in 1907j
Out qf every dollar added to tha
capitalization, 85 cents goes into the
property, while the company rakes
off 10 per cent commission and 5
pe rcent brokerage.
The $303,000 shortage paid to the
Calumet system last year under the
5 per cent guarantee was taken from
the general fund before the city's 55
per cent was taken out, and the city
paid 55 per cent of the $303,000.
Busby said his salary as president
was $60,000 and Blair's salary as
chairman of the board was $30,000.
