REPLY TO J. N. S.-J. N. S., in a
well-written reply, to an article of
mine, states that the opinions ex
pressed In that article are both wrong
and inconsistent and directly conflict
with his own opinions. Now, all I
can say is that I gave the subject all
due deliberation and mental reflection
required in the treatment of so deli
cate a topic, and if my views do not
coincide with his I am very sorry for
this unfortunate incident
He asks what class I referred to
when I told of people buying silk
shirts, hose, etc., just because they
thought alleged fashions decreed
them to. Well, I had no particular
class in mind. He also asks if I was
standing on a corner and saw a well
dressed man in silk shirt, white shoes
and white sox walking up the street,
and also a staggering drunkard com
ing along, which would I pick as the
better citizen? (Old stuff, J. N. S.)
Why, the drunkard, eight times out
of ten, because "many a noble and
honest heart is borne along with a
staggering gait," while "a heart of ig
nominy needs silk to hide its shame
fulness." In a closing sentence he says,
bring on the fashions and let me go
to Podunk for the rest of my life. Po
dunk! Great heavenB, no! To be
exiled from that dear Halsted street
would break my heart. So, J. N. S.,
please keep back the fashions.

Recently a young boy of 15, who
is employed in the postoffice as a
special delivery boy, and who is the
sole support of a family of seven, was
fined ?50 for speeding on his motor
cycle. The cop that made the arrest
testified the boy made a speed of 49
miles an hour, although It was proved
the topnotch Bpeed of his machine
was only 24 miles an hour.
Nobody was hurt But then he was
only a poor boy and earning a living
for himself and the rest of the fam

world in point of population; London
is the first In 1910,' Berlin had a
population of 2,071,695; London's
population In 1911 was 4,522,961.
Berlin traces its authentic history
back to the early twelfth century,
though traditions of the fishing vil
lage on the river Spree that later be
came the German capital run back to
the 10th century. In the 13th century
the city acquired municipal rights,
and since the 15th century it has
been the residence of royalty. It's
now the residence of the emperor and
seat of German government
It's considered the cleanest and
healthiest capital in Europe. Its civic
improvements have been studied by
students of city welfare the world
