-viduals in a cutthroat system cannot
remedy it The individuals are pun
ished; the cutthroat system gets
iaway. Let the state's attorney se-
cure an indictment against the sys
tem and let us banish it to the nether
-regions forever. Let us working men
then produce boats and everything
'else for our own use and these trag
edies will disappear, for the magic
hand of labor can create anything
within the limits of the world. It
touches "the- materials of the earth
and a world's fair appears in all its
splendor, battleships ply the seas,
the forces of nature are harnessed,
wonderful mechanism is invented,
but not for use. Let's change the
system, workingmen!
But isn't it somewhat ironical when
you contemplate the fact that the vic
tims were the subject of what the
profit-mongers are pleased to call
"welfare work." A. E. M.
EASTLAND. The Eastland horror
affords a study In psychology. A ves
sel is faulty in construction, is unr
seawthory, has capsized or threat
ened to capsize once or twice before,
yet is used as an excursion boat with
permission of the properly-appointed
authorities, and thousands of people,
-women, childen and families with
lunch basket, baby carts and other
paphernalia are crowded together on
-its upper decks till it capsizes before
.it leaves the dock. Has anything
like it ever been heard of among men
knowing anything whatever of the
natural law of land and water?
Surely children and savages could not
act so foolish. Who are those respons
ible? What minds have they? To
A say that they have minds of children
or of bushmen is an insult to child
hood and to the bushmen. How will
the responsible ones be dealt with?
Why punish them in any other way
than to make .them harmless for ail
time to come?
Poor creatures who trust such as
these! Poor creatures who put their
Jives into the hands of "benevolent"
corporations and government offi
cials! It never entered the minds of
the Western Electric employes to
question anything' the company did.
They company was their god. The
company arranged the excursions.
The company arranges entertain
ments and moving picture shows.
The company looks into the welfare
of their employes rn every detail,
surely it must be all right if the com
pany has arranged it It never oc
curred to them to question, to inves
tigate for themselves. It was the
come-on game. Follow, obey your
masters and ask no questions Now,
while we are investigating, let an
aroused public demand that it be
mode known into whose pockets the
enormous profits from this "benevo
lent" excursion would have gone.

HOW ABOUT IT? A few weeks
ago the trans-Atlantic liner Lusitania
left New York for England. On board
were many wealthy and prominent
Americans. Two miles off the coast
of Ireland it encountered a German
submarine and was torpedoed. Many
of the passengers were drowned.
The United States government im
mediately sent a note to Germany de
manding an explanation for the de
struction of American lives and
threatened to break diplomatic rela
tions if the lives of Americans were
not safeguarded at sea.
But how about the steamer East
land, which sank suddenly in the
Chicago river, killing several hundred
American citizens? Will the govern
ment demand an explanation from
the officiate of the steamship com
pany and -threaten them with impris
onment if the lives of the citizens are
not safeguarded on the inland water
ways? Here is an opportunity for the
government to show whether it does
protect the lives of its citizens at
home or abroad, regardless of wheth
er they are killed by a German sub-
1 marine or Jhrough the criminal negh
