r f'f r ,i,r ' ' n i m m'"'! lightly and not believed on mere re ports. It is probable that one or two cit- s ies will lose their clubs, but nothing 3 definite will be known for some time. By licking the Cardinals yesterday Manager Bresnahan upheld the tradi tion of ten years and Cubs will finish in the first division, though their per centage is under .500. The West Sid ers lost seven more games than they won, due to a flock of reasons that it just as well not to go into. The best thing to to it to forget the work of the Cub team of 1915 and look for ward to 1916. Certainly Bresnahan will make some changes in his lineup before the opening game of next season and he is bound to add strength. Young sters and veterans who still have some service in them will be welded together in an effort to secure a win ner. One shift may result in bring ing Buck Herzog here, and that would round out the infield. Bresnahan will be working under a handicap in the city series, as many of the new men on the team will be ineligible to compete against the Sox, as they were signed late in the sea son. This applies to Mulligan, McCarthy and Douglas, a trio who have great ly strengthened the club in the clos ing stages of the pennant fight Shuf fling Phil will be unable to do any pitching in the civil war, leaving the brunt of the battle up to Vaughn, Lavender and Humphries or Pierce. It is barely possible Bresnahan will cross all the dopesters and send Karl Adams out to start a game. The infield suffers the most, just as it did in the series last season, when Fisher had to be benched, Der rick going to short This time Mc Carthy and Mulligan will be out of it Phelan will be returned to second base and Fisher will hold down short Rowland is under no such handi cap. His regular team was gathered before Sept 1 and goes into the city Eeries intact This gives him a wide margin on two places on the infield, short and second, and leaves the edge to the Cubs at first and third. The keystone is the more important, how ever, and for that reason the South Siders must be conceded the better infield. Dopesters are laying great stress on the strength of the Sox pitching staff in picking the South Siders to win the tilt That would be well enough in a season's work, but in short struggles of seven games or less a team does not need a Stable full of gunmen. If Bresnahan can find three heavers capable of working steadily against the South Siders he need not worry about any difference in pitch ing strength. There really is little dope on either team. Both have been disappoint ments and are noted for not doing the things expected of them. John Collins and Happy Feisch belted homers yesterday to help Sox whip Browns in the final. Faber was knocked out and Russell went to his krescue. Column upon column of dope is be ing ground out on inspired type mills regarding the chances of Phils and Red Sox in the world's series. And the whole mess might be simmered down to a discussion of Alexander and his mighty right arm. If Alex and his low fast ball can stop the Red Sox sluggers the National leaguers have a chance. And in that event only have they a look-in. No one would compare the two teams on an even basis. It is Alexander against the American league, and Moran's star is going against the best hitters he has seen in many a year. The gentlemen who are figuring him to win three games in the series evidently haven't watched that crash ing crew of Carrigan belt good pitch ing this season. Detroit closed its season with 100 wins by beating Cleveland, the great- est total a runner-up ever recorded. Cobb established a base-stealing rec ord, pilfering 97 sacks.
