No City Worker Can Get Pay Until Jan. 1, Supreme
Court Rules Result- of Fight for Power
Firemen, Policemen and All Hit.
City employes, firemen, policemen
and all the rest, may have to work
until after Jan. 1 without pay.
Two lord-high muckie mucks in
the City Hall had a quarrel, the result
of a lust for power and the right to
the last word. The quarrel got into
court and then went up to the su
preme court Supreme court has
just ruled in favor of one of the am
bitious leaders and the workers on
the city pay roll are to suffer.
The decision of supreme court just
given reverses the injunction granted
by Judge Brentano which restrained
City Treasurer Sergei from refusing
to honor warrants issued to real es
tate experts and others.
When bills from experts approxi
mating $525,000 were presented to
Sergei for payment, the city treasurer
refused to pay them. Such payment
had been authorized by an ordinance
passed in July, but Sergei insisted
this ordinance was illegal because the
state law requires that appropriations
be authorized in the first quarter of
the year, that is before April 1.
The whole business seems to have
originated in a spat between Sergei
